Quick Answer Definition

MatnWave is a dedicated 7-day small-group BJJ and surf camp operating in Taghazout and Anza, Morocco. Limited to strictly twelve (12) practitioners per cohort, the experience combines daily ocean surf coaching, technical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu labs led by brown belt instructors, and quiet coastal recovery. Designed for European martial artists seeking serious training without party crowds.

Is MatnWave Right for You?

We keep each cohort small and carefully selected so everyone shares the same commitment to training, recovery, and respect.

Who This Camp Is Built For

  • Practitioners of all belt levels
Looking for technical BJJ progression without ego or reckless rolling.
  • Surfers & beginners
Want ocean coaching adapted to daily tide and swell conditions.
  • Solo travelers & focused duos
Seeking a structured, healthy group dynamic in Morocco.
  • Europe-based travelers
Looking for a short, direct trip to Morocco (3–4 hour flights).

Better Suited Elsewhere

  • Seeking a nightlife-focused trip?
We keep evenings quiet to support recovery and high-quality training.
  • Prefer large camps?
If 100+ participants in a crowded gym appeals to you, our 12-person cohort isn't the right fit.
  • Single-discipline focus?
If you plan to skip all surf or all BJJ, a dedicated single-sport camp may suit you better.
  • Unstructured experience?
MatnWave runs on a tight daily schedule—this is coordinated training, not a casual retreat.

BJJ Training Protocol

Technical Rigor, Zero Ego

BJJ training takes place in our shaded mat space, led by head coach Mehdi Dounia (Brown Belt, African Sub-Champion) and competition coach Carlos Vargas (Brown Belt, AJP Tour competitor).

Surf and BJJ blocks are separated by recovery time so the group is not doing both disciplines at maximum intensity back-to-back. BJJ labs focus on positional mechanics, passing chains and guard control, while evening sparring uses agreed pace and positional constraints.

Honest Trip Expectations & Limitations

We believe in full transparency before you book your flights to Morocco:

  • Physical Fatigue
Combining 2+ hours of paddling with 2 hours of BJJ daily will test your conditioning. Hydration and rest are non-negotiable.
  • Atlantic Ocean Swells
Surf conditions fluctuate with tide and swell direction. Our coaches choose spots based on safety, which may require 20–30 min shuttle rides on certain days.
  • Training & Recovery Focus
MatnWave is structured for high-performance training and recovery. If your main goal is nightlife and socializing, our camp atmosphere will not meet your expectations.
Frequently Asked Questions

BJJ Surf Camp FAQ

What is MatnWave’s BJJ + surf camp in Morocco?

MatnWave is a small-group BJJ and surf camp operating in Taghazout and Anza, Morocco. Each 7-day cohort combines daily morning surf coaching, afternoon technical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions, controlled evening sparring, and premium accommodation for a maximum of 12 practitioners.

Who is this BJJ surf camp suitable for?

Our cohorts are designed for European BJJ practitioners of all belt levels (white to black) and all surf experience levels (beginner to advanced) who want serious physical training, a structured schedule, and quiet coastal recovery without festival or party crowds.

What is the difference between Only Roll and Roll & Stay packages?

Only Roll includes all BJJ training, surf coaching, equipment access, and local beach shuttles for guests staying elsewhere. Roll & Stay adds 7 nights of accommodation at our base with daily macro-aligned breakfast and Agadir airport transfer coordination.

How are BJJ and surf sessions structured each day?

Surf blocks run when ocean tides and swell conditions are optimal (usually morning dawn patrol). BJJ technique blocks take place in our shaded mat room, followed by evening positional rolling with strict intensity controls to manage fatigue.

What airport should I fly into for MatnWave Morocco?

Fly into Agadir–Al Massira Airport (AGA), located 20 minutes from our Anza base and 45 minutes from Taghazout. Airport transfer timing is coordinated directly with your cohort host prior to arrival.

Can solo travellers join the BJJ surf camp?

Yes. Solo travellers can apply for any open MatnWave cohort. The maximum group size is 12 practitioners, and the shared training, surf and meal rhythm is designed so guests meet the full cohort quickly. Applicants should still be comfortable with a structured group week and quiet evenings.

What happens when surf conditions are unsuitable?

The surf coach selects the safest suitable break for the group using the current swell, wind and tide. If conditions are not appropriate for a participant’s level, the schedule can shift to mobility, recovery, theory or a later surf window. Ocean access is always conditional on safety.
